Sunshine is wonderful for our mood and wellbeing but prolonged exposure during the summer months can pose serious health risks, particularly for children and animals. As UK summers continue to bring hotter temperatures and stronger UV levels, it’s more important than ever to create safe, shaded spaces at home. At Radiant Blinds Limited, we help families protect what matters most by providing high-quality sun shading solutions, all manufactured in our factory in Surbiton and installed across London and the Home Counties.
Why Sunshine Can Be Dangerous for Children
Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin, making it especially vulnerable to UV damage. Even short periods in direct sunlight can lead to:
Sunburn, which increases the risk of skin cancer later in life
Dehydration, particularly during outdoor play
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can develop quickly in young children
Long-term skin damage from repeated UV exposure
Young children often don’t recognise when they are overheating, so providing reliable shade at home is essential.
The Hidden Risks of Sunshine for Animals
Pets, especially dogs, are also highly susceptible to the effects of strong sunshine. Unlike humans, animals cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently. Common risks include:
Overheating and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening
Dehydration, even when water is available
Sunburn, particularly on noses, ears, and light-coloured fur
Increased risk of skin cancer, especially in short-haired or pale-coated breeds
Animals instinctively seek shade, so having a cool, sheltered outdoor area can make a critical difference to their comfort and safety.
How an Awning Creates Safe Summer Shelter
Installing an awning at your home provides instant, effective protection from harmful UV rays and excessive heat. A professionally fitted awning:
Creates a shaded outdoor space for children to play safely
Provides a cool resting area for pets during hot weather
Reduces UV exposure by up to 90% or more, depending on fabric choice
Helps prevent overheating and dehydration
Makes gardens and patios usable even during peak sunshine
An awning acts as a practical and attractive extension of your home, offering peace of mind throughout the summer.
